On this day in 1843, Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg was born!
Grieg had several friends in Manchester, including the Hallé’s principal violinist, Simon Speelman. The two would write to each other often, talking about concerts, music amongst other topical matters.
We particularly like this letter sent by Grieg in 1897, as it includes a very musical pup in the doodle section!
Colin Currie and the Hallé begin this exciting mini-fest of Steve Reich’s music in February with Music for Pieces of Wood and Music for Ensemble and Orchestra. For Reich’s major choral and orchestral work The Desert Music, members of the RNCM Chamber Choir also take to the stage.
