The Hallé’s lunchtime Chamber Series at Hallé St Peter’s provides a unique opportunity to hear players and guest artists perform in more intimate surroundings.

We are sorry to announce that Alexander Gadjiev is now unable to perform at this concert. But we are delighted that Associate Leader of the Hallé Sarah Ewins is joined by pianist Darius Battiwalla, horn player Julian Plummer and cellist Jonathan Pether for a programme featuring two of the greatest trios in the repertoire.

Beethoven wrote the Archduke trio in 1810 and dedicated it to his patron, Archduke Rudolph. It is the largest scale of his piano trios, symphonic in breadth but with moments of amazing intimacy.

The concert continues with Brahms’ Horn Trio. Written at the age of 32, it was the last chamber work he wrote as a young man, and commemorates his mother. Originally scored for natural horn, the outdoors associations of the instrument somehow seem to banish the sombreness of the slower first and third movements.
