Recognised as one of the country’s leading mixed-voice youth choirs, the Hallé Youth Choir was established in 2003 for talented young singers, aged 13-19 years, from across the North West and beyond.
The choir performs a wide range of diverse repertoire together with the Hallé, other ensembles and independently. In January 2023 the Youth Choir featured in Game On!, the Hallé’s first concert dedicated to music from the world of video games. The Youth Choir has also joined for Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius with Sir Mark Elder in 2023 and James Macmillan’s new work Timotheus, Bacchus and Cecilia which was performed for Sir Mark’s final concerts as Music Director in Manchester and at the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall.
Highlights of the 2024-25 season include performing in the annual Hallé Carol Concerts and Youth Ensembles Celebration, as well as Mahler Symphony No.2 with new Principal Conductor, Kahchun Wong and a chamber concert in the Hallé’s Ancoats home, Hallé St Peter’s. July 2025 will see the Youth Choir and Youth Orchestra tour to Lake Garda, performing in and around Verona and the region.
The Youth Choir was honoured to sing at the National Civic Memorial Service for the first anniversary of the Manchester Arena attack. It has performed live with Elbow and Snow Patrol, and featured on several of the Hallé’s own label recordings, Elbow’s album build a rocket boys! and on Mercury Prize-nominated artist C Duncan’s album Health.
