On this day in 1904, members of the famous Brodsky Quartet, who also happened to be members of the Hallé Orchestra, agreed to give a performance without a fee and that proceeds instead go to the Sustentation (Pension) Fund of the Royal Manchester College of Music.  

The RMCM was also founded by Charles Hallé, and he was Principal of the college from its opening in 1893 to his death just 2 years later.
