During this week back in 1948, the Hallé were wowing audiences in Austria. This was only the Hallé’s second foreign tour, with the orchestra flying to Salzburg where US troops had opened the airfield for their arrival!

The concert in Innsbruck on the 1st June completely sold out, so Barbirolli allowed those who couldn’t get a ticket for the concert to buy one for the rehearsal.

Writing about the successes of the tour, Barbirolli sent a telegram to his wife Evelyn, which reads:

Overwhelming ovations in Innsburck and Salzburg, having great time Evelyn, Mozart great success, tell Rothwells much love. Thanks Telegrams, Barbirolli”
