Back in 1871, Charles Hallé requested the services of second violin Mr G Nelson for twelve concerts in Manchester, including 4th January. He was offered 15 shillings per concert, which is around £480 in today’s money, with the stipulation that he does not play the Saturday evening concerts. There is no indication as to why that would be, but given that Mr Nelson is listed amongst the orchestra for the 4th of January playing in ten different pieces programmed, we can only assume he accepted the terms from Charles Hallé.
