NEW RELEASE: Elgar: Symphony No.1 and No.2
This album marks the culmination of Sir Mark's tenure as Music Director of the Hallé. Sir mark describes this as “music that lies at the very heart of what the Hallé and I have achieved together over the past quarter century”.
Sir Mark Elder has long been hailed for his interpretation of the works of Elgar, with acclaimed performances with the Hallé. This release marks the culmination of Sir Mark’s tenure as Music Director of the orchestra, in new recordings of the two symphonies, and a bonus digital track featuring Colin Matthews’ arrangement of Elgar’s part-song The Prince of Sleep (1925). Matthews has described the ‘remarkable privilege to have been an observer of the Hallé’s development over more than twenty years, watching it become, under Mark, one of the finest orchestras not just in the UK but in the world.’
“These live performances of the composer's two official symphonies date from 2018 and 2021. They show conductor, orchestra and music working together in perfect harmony.”
“...the orchestra moves and breathes as one and they make Elgar’s music a deeply moving experience.”
“Elder is wonderfully at home in the second symphony, a work the Hallé first played under Elgar himself. The Hallé brass have a field day and the lower strings will break hearts in the Larghetto. The second symphony needs a lot more love than the first, and gets it here. ”
