Thanks to the generous support of The National Lottery Heritage Fund and National Lottery players, this remarkable project aims to create a permanent public home for the Hallé Archive – a cultural treasure trove that traces the Hallé orchestra’s journey since its foundation in 1858.

Building on the success of Ancoats: The Hallé Story, this next phase combines essential heritage preservation with engaging community activity, continuing to place local voices at the heart of the whole experience. Designed to bring people together through storytelling and shared heritage, community events range from archive talks and exhibitions to creative hands-on activities and art clubs, family heritage days, supper clubs and volunteering opportunities, all inspired by the orchestra’s history.

Under the guidance of professional archivists, work continues on the cataloguing and preservation of the archive’s contents, including rare concert programmes, photographs and recordings. The Hallé Archive showcases the breadth of Manchester’s musical heritage, telling the stories of the many musicians, philanthropists and businessmen who helped the orchestra to evolve into the world-renowned organisation it is today.
