The Hallé is delighted to announce that BBC Radio 3 has selected pianist Giorgi Gigashvili as the latest winner of The Terence Judd-Hallé Award.
The award commemorates the work and tragically short life of Terence Judd, a remarkable talent who passed away in 1979 at the age of 22. After the establishment of a trust in his name, the award has been presented in association with the Hallé since 1982, with notable past recipients including Stephen Hough, Nikolai Lugansky and Elisabeth Brauss.
In 2021, the award was relaunched as an annual partnership with the BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists scheme, to support the continued development of an outstanding young pianist coming to the end of their time on the scheme.
Each year an exceptional pianist on the BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists scheme is chosen as the winner of the award and this year’s prize includes exciting concerto and chamber performance opportunities during the Hallé’s 2024-25 Manchester Season, which will be announced on Thursday 2 May.
The Prize
- At least one concerto performance with the Hallé at The Bridgewater Hall
- A chamber recital with Hallé musicians at Hallé St Peter’s
- A solo recital as part of the Manchester Mid-Day Concert Series
- A cash prize of £7,000
Giorgi Gigashvili
Giorgi Gigashvili was born in Tbilisi, Georgia, in 2000 and studied at the Tbilisi State Conservatory. Giorgi has already won major prizes in Spain, Italy, Zurich and Israel and adds the Terence-Judd-Hallé Award as his first UK-based prize. His debut album Meeting My Shadow was released in April 2023 to great critical acclaim.

I know about the history and the tragic life of Terence and after receiving this award I became immensely touched with the feeling that he started breathing in me and now I have a duty to fulfil his ideas and dreams.”
