Mahler’s Symphony No.5

Spoil yourself with Rachmaninov’s wickedly brilliant Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini and Mahler’s triumphant Symphony No.5.
Nineteenth-century violin virtuoso Niccolo Paganini was supposed to have sold his soul to Satan in exchange for his talent. Rachmaninov’s variations on one of Paganini’s compositions prove that the devil has all the best tunes.
We performed the UK premiere of the Rhapsody in Manchester back in 1935, with Rachmaninov himself as soloist. Russian-trained pianist Alexei Volodin brings a galvanising energy to the piece.
Mahler’s Fifth Symphony begins with a funeral march but this monumental work gave a new lease of musical life to the composer, travelling from a mood of despair to a joyful conclusion. Mahler specialist Kahchun Wong will bring his signature energy to the performance which concludes with a lively celebration.
